Terrace Water Rescue with the help of renowned local artist Joe Mandur Jr is fundraising to obtain a Scanning Sonar to be used in the Northwest and the province of British Columbia.
The MS 1000 Scanning Sonar turns a typical PC into a high resolution scanning tool. In recent years there has been a proliferation of sonar imaging systems designed to reduce the time needed to locate and recover drowning victims, automobiles, aircrafts, and other submerged crime scene evidence. Sonar is widely used in the United States by Water Rescue Teams and Law Enforcement Agencies. The Terrace Water Rescue Team has successfully used Sonar in the past. In one past search the team devoted 38 consecutive days searching with this the MS 1000 Scanning Sonar to help bring an end to a 50 day search and recovery operation. This type of work reduces needless pain and suffering endured by families and friends during prolonged aquatic searches.
This equipment can be more efficient than divers. “It searches faster, can stay underwater for an indefinite period of time and in complete darkness can detect objects embedded in the bottom.
“Soul Catchers”
Limited Edition Print
The primary image is a bentwood box holding many soul catchers. These boxes were used by First Nations Chiefs & others of high rank to hold their valuables. Copper detailing increases the value of this box because traditionally Chiefs, and others of high rank, owned prestigious copper shields that showed their wealth and structure. The white operculum shells inlaid in the box lid and at the base of the box add to the worth because the shells were used as a form of currency.
Within the box there are a variety of soul catchers. All of the soul catchers are depicted as being carved out of bone and ivory and feature different crests or spirit beings. The purpose of a soul catcher is to contain the soul or spirit of a person. When someone was ill, the soul catcher was used to contain their soul and when a person became better their soul was returned back to their body. Soul catchers could also be used to capture the soul of a person who was near the point of crossing over to the other side; then when a couple was ready to conceive, the soul would be re-incarnated as their child. In this manner, members of a village could remain near their loved ones and carry on their contribution to the well being of the entire village.
The colour blue in the soul catchers denotes spirituality. The green colour represents healing. Combining the elements of design and colour bring the message of spiritual soul healing and the rewards that spring forth from the healing process.
This theme describes the role that Search & Rescue, other persons and guardian angels who bring our family members home and help address our need for closure.
